Daan Van Baalen founded the Norwegian Gestalt Institute (NGI) in 1986. He is currently the director and co-owner of the Institute, where he also works as a therapist, supervisor and trainer. He holds the European Certificate for Psychotherapy (ECP).
Daan has been a Medical Doctor since 1971, a Gestalt therapist since 1975, a Psychosynthesis Therapist since 1981 and a Group Analyst since 1983. He worked for ten years as a general practitioner and a psychotherapist. He collaborated in the Erasmus University of Rotterdam’s research project on Cancer and Psychotherapy, working as a psychotherapist with chronically ill patients. From 1979 to 1995, he taught at and directed the Multidimens Belgian-Dutch Institute for Gestalt Therapy. He obtained his Doctoral Degree in 2012.
He has been Head of External Relations at the Fédération Internationale des organismes de Formation à la Gestalt (FORGE) since 2008. He has also been Head of External Relations at the European Association for Gestalt Therapy (EAGT), Head of the Norwegian Association for Psychotherapy (NFP), Board Member of the European Association for Psychotherapy (EAP), Chairman of the Vlaams-Nederlands Gestalt Netwerk, and Member of the editorial committee of Voorgond magazine.
Daan is particularly interested in the development of Gestalt Therapy and its utilization beyond the context of traditional individual therapy, e.g. in group therapy, in organizational contexts, in the context of businesses and multinational firms.
He is also interested in how to use diagnostic thinking in Gestalt Therapy.
